Discernment

What is vocational discernment?

Discerning one’s calling in life is a process that requires sincere prayer, and whose goal is to respond fully to the love of God who has loved us first. It is important to learn about religious life and specific religious communities, pray earnestly and take active steps of discernment in resolving the question of your calling in life.

What are some active steps of discernment?

  • At every step of the way, Our Lord is with you. He uses all of the people and circumstances in your life to draw you closer to himself. It’s so important to pray at every stage of your discernment, because prayer gives you the light and the strength you need in order to recognize and take each step.

  • You can contact us by filling out the vocational inquiry form on our website. At any stage of your discernment, feel free to contact our vocation directress by email and/or phone. She is very happy to answer your questions, give you helpful general vocation discernment advice, and support you in your personal spiritual growth.

  • Sign up for one of our Come and See day retreats, which we host throughout the year. During these retreats, you get to immerse yourself in the life of our community, and experience for yourself what it’s like to be in the convent!

  • A good spiritual director can help you more clearly discern God's will for you. But whether you have one or not, go regularly to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, daily Mass (on days when you are able to), and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Many find that taking part in a discernment group with like-minded women can also be helpful. You might be surprised at how these simple things can help support you in your discernment.

  • If you live within a reasonable distance, we also recommend that you volunteer in some of our apostolates (or other works of charity), and visit us occasionally. And, near or far, keep contact with the vocation directress. She’s here for you!

  • If you feel the grace to say yes to a religious vocation, and sense that the timing is right for you, meet with the vocation directress and ask for an application. The application process normally takes 2-3 months. If your application is accepted, you will receive a letter of acceptance, along with the information you need to prepare for the September 8th entrance day. The vocation directress is available to accompany you as you make the transition to convent life.

  • The best way to find out is simply trying it. The journey to full profession as a Sister of Our Lady Immaculate takes 8 years from entrance to final vows. During this time, you have the support and prayers of the members of the entire community, who are discerning with you.

Be not afraid, and trust in the Lord! He will bless you in whichever vocation he has in mind for you.
